Friday, October 10, 2025, came and went without much chatter about it being World Mental Health Day—a day meant to remind everyone that mental health isn’t some fancy perk, it’s a basic human right. Every year on October 10th, people everywhere take a moment to shine a light on mental health, push back against stigma, and call for better support for those dealing with struggles most can’t see.

But this isn't just a day on the calendar.

It's a call to action.

Why Mental Health Matters More Than Ever

From big life disasters to the little everyday stresses, mental health is taking a hit. Trauma doesn’t always leave marks you can see. Anxiety doesn’t always show up with a warning. And depression? It doesn’t always look like being sad..

  • 1 in 8 people globally live with a mental health condition.
  • In the U.S., suicide remains a leading cause of death among youth and young adults.
  • Access to care is still deeply unequal, especially in marginalized communities and crisis zones.

We can’t just put mental health on the back burner. It’s key to feeling safe, staying strong, and living with dignity.

What This Day Means for Our Communities

World Mental Health Day isn't just about awareness, it's about accountability.

It's about asking:

  • Are we creating safe spaces for people to speak up?
  • Are we challenging harmful narratives that silence suffering?
  • Are we investing in trauma-informed care, not just crisis response?

Your Voice Can Shift the Culture

Whether you're an advocate, a parent, a teacher, or a neighbor, your voice matters. Here's how you can take action:

  • Share stories that normalize mental health conversations.
  • Support organizations providing culturally competent care.
  • Challenge stigma in your circles, online and offline.
  • Push for policy change that prioritizes mental health funding and access.

From Safety, Sass & Storytelling

At Safety, Sass & Storytelling (just a little page I threw together on Facebook as part of my main profile—kind of like 65, It's Just a Number), we’re all about speaking the truth with a little extra kindness. We’re into advocacy that lifts people up without piling on. Oh, and we’re firm believers that mental health deserves just as much attention, funding, and care as physical health does.

Why wait for another awareness day to roll by? Let’s create a vibe where healing’s respected, help’s easy to get, and no one has to face their battles alone.

I shared this article on 65, It's Just a Number because I have firsthand experience with mental health. I'll be sharing my personal story soon.
